Pro Tip – Clematis prefer full sun (except where noted) but need to have their roots shaded. Achieve this by planting a low growing perennial at the base of the plant. It is always best to mulch with compost or organic mulch rather than rock. Keep your Clematis well watered; do not allow it to dry out. Clematis climb using tendrils to grab small wires or string. They will not attach themselves to wood or brick walls.

Type 2—All first flowering comes from the previous season’s growth. In spring when you see buds begin to swell, cut off all dead material above live buds.
Type 3—These bloom on all new growth. Prune back to 12–18″ in early spring before growth appears.
